what framerates should i get?
« on: April 20, 2001, 04:13:00 PM »
Very bored at school today so i was checking out some stuff on the HTC main page. Under screen shots i looked at the ones for beta on the date of 8/28/99. It says at the bottem:
"This set of screen shots was generated on a PIII-450 with a TNT2 in 1024x768 resolution.
"

Then the spit 9 thumb nail with in outside view with guns firing shows 84 fps!!! WTF? i have a much faster comp and i'm running at a lower res and when i'm offline playing away from fields in the hills like that shot was taken i get much lower fps. i can usaly only get around 25-35. whats up with that?
What fps should i be getting?

Sys:
1.1 gig athlon
128mb
60 GB HD
16mb nvidia tnt2 m64, i know a bottel neck, will be replaced soon.

i wouldnt say i have my system tweaked but i have done just about all the simple things people post on this board. Like having most start up programs off, monitor refresh rate set to max, some simple other things. Any ideas?

thanks

Isnt that a crime?

Im sure you'll get some solid suggetions here, but once you get that vid card out, and put something snazzy in, it will be a world of difference.

Errr, August 1999?  You're talking about 1/4 the code thats in the game now, it has no special effects, clouds were rare if even there...its comparing apples to oranges.

Rip,
Isnt frame rate determined by what you see on screen, not whats going on in the game? i understand that there was a lot less code, but only some of that code affected what was in that picture. like the ground texture and plane texture. but even NOW if i were to take an external pic of a spit 9 over some hills away from clouds and bases would there be that much more code in the picture affecting MY framerate then there was in THAT picture being sent to THAT computer?
Or am i wrong? does all effects in game have to do with framerate no matter where you are?

Thanks agian for any help

Hi hogfarmr,
The theoretical discussion about what code affects framerate and what doesnt is moot in this case because your problem is all in your video card. The TNT II M64 is a bastard stepchild of the TNT II family and is an unfortunate product of "bargain" marketing practices. It is crippled by design due to its 64 bit data bus, hence the M64. It actually renders lower framerates than TNT I cards in most games. Many people have fallen victim to this and many computer manufacturers have used OEM versions in their "value" boxes to save money. They cannot be compared in any way to a true TNT II, which you are refering to in that screenshot. They are junk, plain and simple, and no amount of tweaking will give you good framerates in contemporay games like AH, sorry.

Time to go shopping for a decent video card to match the power of the rest of your box. On the bright side, you can get alot of power for very little money these days. Pick your budget and you can get alot of help here making a smart choice. Good luck!

Hog, there's a few things you'll need to do to get playable framerates with that card.  Play low resolution... 640x480 or 800x600.  Play 16 bit color.  32 bit will slow you down significantly.  Make sure you press shift-F2 or even shift-F3 to reduce terrain distance.

All of the above will help you to eek out a few more frames/second until you get a better video card.

Goto this url http://www.m3dzone.com/  and d/l the Nvidia Reg Patch 3.51 which will allow you to OverClock your card and other various mod's to increase your frame rate...

A tnt2 m64 does not have the fill rate to go any faster than 30 fps or so.  A gf2 gts would probably double your frame rate.

In the meantime, you might try enabling triple buffering.  If it doesn't help your frame rate, just disable it again.

To enable this, click video when you start AH.  You should see the check box there.

Probably want to benchmark your rig, to properly compare it to others:

Have you tried different refresh rates for your monitor?
